Shangwei Sentiment, Zhengxu Dream: The Zhengzhou Airport–Xuchang Metropolitan Railway Officially Enters Initial Operation
At 11:58 on December 28, the Zhengzhou Airport–Xuchang Metropolitan Railway commenced initial operations.
The Zhengzhou Airport–Xuchang Metropolitan Railway Project is being constructed in segmented sections by the cities of Zhengzhou and Xuchang, with simultaneous completion and concurrent operation. The line runs from Chang’an Road North Station in the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Development Zone in the north to Xuchang East Station in Xuchang City in the south, spanning a total length of 67.13 kilometers and featuring 27 stations in all. Of these, the Zhengzhou section stretches 33.43 kilometers and includes 16 underground stations, while the Xuchang section spans 33.7 kilometers and comprises 11 stations—9 elevated and 2 underground. The entire line includes one interchange station, where passengers can transfer to the Suburban Line at the Airport North Station. Upon opening, Zhengzhou’s metro network will comprise 11 lines with a total operating length of 344.83 kilometers, ranking it 10th nationwide.
The Zhengzhou Airport–Xuchang Metropolitan Railway is a backbone line of the intercity rail transit network in the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration, connecting Xinzheng International Airport, the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone, Changge City in Xuchang, and Xuchang’s central urban area. It runs through the core area of the Zhengzhou–Xuchang industrial corridor and plays a profound and vital role in promoting deep integration between Zhengzhou and Xuchang, fostering coordinated development between the two cities, and supporting the high-quality development of the Zhengzhou Metropolitan Area.
The Zhengzhou–Xuchang Metropolitan Railway is a fully automated line, with trains equipped with the world’s highest-grade, fully driverless technology. More than ten core operational systems—including the communication system, rolling stock, and signaling system—incorporate advanced intelligent technologies, delivering outstanding technological sophistication, exceptional safety, and unparalleled reliability. During construction, the project successfully overcame numerous challenges, including crossing the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the Beijing–Guangzhou High-Speed Railway, Xinzheng International Airport, and the West-to-East Gas Pipeline. The entire line employs industry-leading dedicated rail return current technology, fundamentally resolving the technical challenge of stray currents posing risks to the airport and oil-and-gas pipelines. In addition, the project integrates cutting-edge technologies such as dynamic-balanced adaptive air-conditioning and integrated HVAC–ventilation energy-saving design, while adhering to meticulous construction practices to ensure a comfortable and visually appealing riding experience, all in an effort to deliver a truly high-quality, landmark project.
The Zhengzhou–Xuchang Metropolitan Railway is designated with an Airport Blue color scheme and adopts the design theme “Building Dreams and Leading the Way, a Vibrant Zhengzhou–Xuchang,” offering a visually appealing and aesthetically pleasing architectural experience. The public area of the Airport North Station features a 11-meter-wide, column-free arched roof structure, with curved, arched top and bottom slabs; the column-free section spans 20.3 meters, and the station concourse has a clear height of 9.1 meters. At Xinzheng Airport Station, the track passes beneath Terminal 1 at a burial depth of 28.3 meters, creating spacious structural conditions that are further enhanced by strategically placed openings in the concourse walls to admit natural light, thereby crafting a distinctive spatial effect. At Shuanghehu Station, the design leverages the site’s topographical features to convey the ecological essence of Shuanghehu through simple forms and symbolic motifs, while colorful, natural underwater windows evoke the dreamlike beauty of Shuanghehu’s pristine aquatic environment. The Sports Center Station draws its architectural form from the dynamic gesture of athletic running, highlighting the vitality, tension, and aesthetic appeal of movement and symbolizing the momentum of Xuchang’s urban development.
