Classification of Girder Transport Vehicles

The beam transporter serves as the power unit in a truck-trailer combination, towing the trailer to carry out transportation operations.

  (1) Classification

  1. By connection method

Automobiles (trucks or beam transporters) that tow full trailers are coupled using a towing hook and a trailer coupling.

  The beam-transporting tractor-trailer is connected via a fifth-wheel coupling and a kingpin.

Tow special trailers using a rotary bolster to connect with the cargo.

  2. By Drive Type

The 4×2 type beam transporter has relatively low tractive effort and is mainly used for high-speed motorized trainsets.

The 6×4 beam transporter can increase the load-carrying capacity at the fifth-wheel mounting.

The 6×6 beam-transport vehicle features high payload capacity, strong tractive effort, and excellent grade-climbing capability, and is typically used for larger military vehicles.

An 8×8 beam-transport vehicle, used in heavy-duty automotive applications, typically for large military vehicles.

  3. By Purpose

Beam transport vehicles can be classified according to their intended use into cargo-beam transport vehicles, semi-trailer beam transport vehicles, and in-yard beam transport vehicles.

Cargo-carrying tractor-trailer: capable of both towing and carrying cargo, used for full-trailer trains or special trailer trains.

Semi-trailer beam transporter: designed solely for towing, used in semi-trailer train configurations, and equipped with a fifth-wheel on its chassis to support and tow the semi-trailer.

In-plant beam transport vehicles: Used at airports, railway platforms, and port terminals, these vehicles can tow semi-trailers or full trailers.
