Safety Measures for Girder Transport Vehicles

Beam transporter The precast reinforced concrete girder deck, which is fabricated either at a prefabrication plant or at the bridge site, is transported to the bridge-erection machine via dedicated transport vehicles. These vehicles come in various types, such as rail-guided and tire-mounted models. The bridge-erection machine primarily consists of dozens of driving and idler wheels, a chassis, a cab, a control system, and auxiliary equipment. Due to its heavy load capacity—up to 1,000 tons—it must have a low overall height to minimize the machine’s vertical profile. It serves as ancillary equipment for bridge-erection operations.

The girder transporter, also known as a “gun car,” is a specialized piece of equipment designed for the prefabricated-girder erection of highway bridges. It consists of two independent operating units: the drive unit and the trailing unit. The drive unit is powered by a four- or six-cylinder diesel engine, with a four-stage reduction gearbox providing propulsion for the entire vehicle. The final drive is implemented either as a conventional gear set or a planetary gear system. The vehicle is equipped with hydraulic steering and air brakes, and typically features multiple forward and reverse gears.

Safety Measures for Beam Gun Transport Vehicles:

  1. Beam-transport vehicle drivers must hold a valid driver’s license, and signalers and rigging personnel must possess the corresponding valid certifications; unauthorized operation is strictly prohibited.

  2. Before operation, the operator must inspect the following components of the girder transporter’s moving parts: tire pressure, whether the engine radiator is fully filled with coolant, the flexibility of the steering mechanism, the responsiveness of the braking system, and the integrity of the steering adjustment device.

  3. The roads traversed by the girder transporter must be inspected, and any obstacles must be promptly removed. Careful attention should be paid to the pressure exerted on the road surface; sections where the ground bearing capacity is lower than the girder transporter’s tire pressure must be reinforced without delay. Uneven or bumpy sections must be leveled to ensure a smooth road surface. After the girder transporter has been positioned beneath the gantry crane (in the girder-lifting area), the gantry crane shall lift the girder from atop the transporter.

  4. During the installation of girders using a girder transporter, the girder’s center of gravity shall be aligned with the longitudinal centerline of the trolley (i.e., the midpoint of the trolley’s steering mechanism), with a deviation not exceeding 20 mm. When the girder is installed on a curve, its center may be slightly offset from the trolley’s longitudinal centerline. After the girder is installed, it must be securely braced and lashed with stay rods and manual chain hoists to prevent overturning. When the girder is placed on the trolley, a rigid plate or fiber-reinforced rubber pad shall be positioned between the girder and the trolley support to protect the girder concrete.
