The first pile of the main pier for the world’s largest-span girder–truss composite cable-stayed bridge has been successfully poured.

Constructors install the first rebar cage.

Recently, the first pile foundation for the main piers of the Hanjiang Grand Bridge on the Hubei section of the newly constructed Xi’an–Shiyan High-Speed Railway, constructed by China Railway No. 11 Bureau, was successfully poured, marking the official commencement of construction on the foundation works for what is set to be the world’s largest cable-stayed bridge with a girder–truss composite structure.

The Hubei section of the Xi’an–Shiyan High-Speed Railway features a bridge-and-tunnel ratio of 98.85%, with complex geological conditions and high construction safety risks. Moreover, the route traverses the Han River basin, multiple drinking-water source protection zones, and the Yunyang National Geopark, imposing extremely stringent environmental and water-conservation requirements on construction operations.

Construction Site of the Hanjiang Grand Bridge

As a key control project for the Xi’an–Shiyan High-Speed Railway, the Hanjiang Grand Bridge has a total length of 917.45 meters and is designed for a speed of 350 km/h. It features a single-span cable-stayed configuration with a main span of 420 meters, making it the world’s largest cable-stayed bridge with a girder–truss composite structure in terms of span. The bridge towers are H-shaped, each standing 186.5 meters tall, and the foundations of the main piers consist of 24 concrete bored piles, each 3 meters in diameter, to ensure the stability of the superstructure, including the towers.

The P4 main pier’s No. 13 pile, which was concreted this time, has a borehole depth of 28.5 meters and a total concrete placement volume of 186 cubic meters. During construction, the project team employed a staged reaming drilling technique using rotary drilling rigs to penetrate high-strength rock strata, thereby significantly enhancing construction efficiency. In addition, advanced equipment and technologies—such as steel mud tanks, mud separators, grid-type positioning frames for reinforcing cages, and ultrasonic borehole inspection instruments—were utilized to ensure the quality of the structural works while minimizing the project’s impact on the natural environment.

Construction Site and Standardized Temporary Facilities for the Xi’an–Shiyan High-Speed Railway Project

Since the groundbreaking mobilization conference on December 3, 2021, China Railway No. 11 Bureau’s Xi’an–Shiyan High-Speed Railway project has been operating at full throttle, with comprehensive and proactive planning for personnel, equipment, materials, and technology to lay a solid foundation for the rapid advancement of the main construction works. At present, construction on key and challenging projects—including the Hanjiang Grand Bridge, the Youyi Tunnel, and the Liujiahe Fuyin Interchange Bridge—is progressing rapidly.

According to reports, the Xi’an–Shiyan High-Speed Railway originates in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, traverses the Qinling Mountains to the southeast, passes through Shangluo, and terminates in Shiyan, Hubei Province. In Hubei, the line includes stations such as Yunxi and Shiyan East. The total length of the main line is 255.76 kilometers, with 86.36 kilometers in Hubei Province and 169.4 kilometers in Shaanxi Province, and it is designed for a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour.
