Xinhua Net reports on the company’s ongoing construction of the Tuanhe Section of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

World’s Largest U-Shaped Aqueduct—First Span of the Tuanhe Aqueduct for the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Successfully Cast

BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) — According to information obtained on November 9 by reporters from the Construction Administration of the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project from the project’s management bureau, the first span of the main structure of the Tanhe Aqueduct in Dengzhou, Henan Province—the world’s largest U-shaped water-conveyance aqueduct under the South-to-North Water Diversion Project—has successfully completed concrete pouring. With this milestone, the Tanhe Aqueduct project has now entered the main construction phase.

According to available information, each segment of the water-conveyance aqueduct consists of three U-shaped openings, with each opening forming a single truss. Following the official commencement of the Tuanhe Aqueduct Project on December 28, 2010, construction workers first undertook the installation of underground pile foundations. After 108 days of intensive work, they successfully completed the grouting of 342 friction piles, and on June 12 of this year, the project transitioned from underground operations to above-ground construction. On November 2,

The first span of the Tanhe Aqueduct has successfully completed concrete placement. Following a 7-day curing period, the internal formwork of the form-moving machine was smoothly removed, and on-site inspection confirmed that the concrete quality of the first aqueduct segment meets the design requirements.

Unlike precast trough sections, the Tanhe Aqueduct employs an on-site concrete placement technique using a trough-forming machine. This method not only mitigates the impact of topography and landforms on the construction site but also minimizes disruptions to construction scheduling during the flood season. Its structural design is innovative, and the construction processes and equipment employed are unprecedented; as such, it has been designated by the state as a key research project under the 12th Five-Year Plan for Technological Equipment and as a priority science-and-technology initiative of the State Council’s South-to-North Water Diversion Office.

The Tuanhe Aqueduct is a key control project on the central route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, ranking first in the world in terms of internal diameter, single-span length, and maximum water conveyance capacity. Located over the Tuanhe River between Zhangpo Village in Shilin Town and Jizhai Village in Zhaoji Town in Dengzhou City, Henan Province, the aqueduct has a total length of 1,030 meters. Its structure consists of 18 independent, prestressed concrete U-shaped channels, each with three separate compartments, with a single-span weight of up to 1,600 tons. Each compartment has an internal clear dimension of 7.23 × 9.0 meters, a design flow rate of 350 cubic meters per second, and a maximum flow rate of 420 cubic meters per second.

Note: The “currently largest U-shaped water-transfer aqueduct in the world” mentioned in this press release was constructed using the DZ40/1600U trenching machine designed and manufactured by Xinfangda Heavy Industry Technology Co., Ltd.

Xin Dafang has successfully won the bids for three major projects under the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, setting three world-first records. These three projects are: the Shahe Project, featuring 1,200-ton lifting, transportation, and erection equipment; the Shuanglei River Project, with a 30-meter-span, 2,500-ton, two-span rectangular aqueduct-forming machine; and the Tuanhe Project, equipped with a 40-meter-span, 1,600-ton U-shaped aqueduct-forming machine.
