Xin Dafang Successfully Wins Bid for 1,800-Ton Bridge Construction Complete Equipment Package for Hyundai’s Kuwait Gulf Bridge Project

In January 2014, at the dawn of a new year and amid widespread renewal, Xindafang, still basking in the festive spirit of the season, made a bold and pioneering start by securing a “strong opening” contract. With the top technical score, the company distinguished itself in highly competitive international bidding and successfully won the tender for a turnkey package of bridge-construction equipment—totaling 1,800 metric tons—for Hyundai’s Kuwait Gulf Bridge project in South Korea, valued at RMB 240 million. This remarkable achievement has drawn widespread admiration and attention from the global bridge engineering community.

Hyundai Motor Company of South Korea ranks 36th on the Fortune Global 500 list and is one of the country’s five major conglomerates. As a globally renowned enterprise, Hyundai imposes extremely stringent requirements on its partners, conducting comprehensive assessments across all critical dimensions—including corporate philosophy, business reputation, production qualifications, manufacturing capabilities, product quality, and after-sales service. In 2010, Xindafang successfully won a contract from Hyundai to supply a complete set of high-speed railway bridge-construction equipment, including a 1,000-ton girder-launching machine, girder transporter, and bridge-erection machine—marking the first time that China’s full suite of high-speed rail construction equipment has been exported abroad. This milestone not only laid the foundation for Xindafang to enter the international high-end bridge-construction market but also represented the first overseas export of “Made in Zhengzhou” products, earning recognition for China’s specialized construction-equipment sector on the global bridge-building stage and underscoring its significance as a true landmark achievement.

The Kuwait Gulf Bridge, located in an inland gulf in Kuwait in the Middle East, has a span of 60 meters and a design length of 34 kilometers. It is hailed as the world’s fourth longest sea-crossing bridge, following the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in the United States, the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China, and the Hangzhou Bay Bridge in China. The region is a severely polluted desert area characterized by intense heat and aridity, with summer temperatures sometimes soaring as high as 60 degrees Celsius. The bridge features spans ranging from 35 to 60 meters, with a complex array of span configurations; moreover, the artificial island on the southern shore includes a 200-meter-radius S-shaped curved access road, requiring the equipment to be relocated multiple times at sea. Currently, the heaviest single girder used in sea-crossing bridges worldwide is 1,400 tons, whereas each box girder for the Kuwait Gulf Bridge weighs 1,800 tons. To lift and install such a massive structure, the carrying capacity of existing transport-and-erection equipment must be increased to 1,800 tons, which suggests that this project will once again set a new world record for bridge-launching operations.

The harsh climatic conditions and extremely complex operating environments place even higher demands on equipment and pose tremendous challenges. Based on its trust in “Xin Dafang Manufacturing,” Hyundai of South Korea once again extended an olive branch to Xin Dafang. To ensure the high quality and timely completion of the Kuwait project, Xin Dafang established the “Kuwait Project Team,” with Chairman Zhang Zhihua personally serving as team leader and SDI General Manager Wan Kefeng as deputy team leader. Key personnel from all design departments within the Technical Center were seconded to join the team, working overtime, dedicating themselves wholeheartedly, and conducting intensive research. As a result, the team successfully resolved several world-class technical challenges, including the synchronous control technology for two tire-mounted cranes and four beam-transport vehicles, overheating of the hydraulic systems in bridge-construction equipment under high-temperature conditions, engine thermal balance, and power-system reliability. With an overall technical score ranking first, Xin Dafang outperformed leading European and American companies that also participated in the bidding, broke through the competition, and ultimately secured the contract.

Each overseas project is a major review, a comprehensive training exercise, and a process of all-round improvement. To establish a positive international image for Xindafang, the company—from management to frontline staff—has placed utmost importance on these projects, demonstrating unwavering unity and giving their all. On the morning of March 21, the “Mobilization Rally for the 1,800-Ton Bridge Construction Complete Equipment Project for the Hyundai–Kuwait Gulf Bridge in South Korea” was successfully held at Zhengzhou Xindafang. The event was attended by Zhang Zhihua, Chairman and President of the company; Chen Hao, Executive Vice President; Gao Huijie, Vice President; Wan Kefeng, General Manager of SDI; as well as mid- and senior-level managers, members of the Kuwait project team, and representatives of selected employees.

The oath-taking rally also drew attention from more than a dozen media outlets, including Bridge Magazine, Railway Construction Technology Magazine, Railway Standards and Design Magazine, Henan Provincial Television, Henan Daily, Zhengzhou Municipal Television, Zhengzhou Daily, and Zhengzhou People’s Radio, all of which dispatched reporters to the event to conduct on-site interviews and coverage.

At the oath-taking rally, President Zhang Zhihua presented battle flags to representatives from the Technology Center, the Production and Manufacturing Center, and the Quality, Safety, and Operations Management Department, and then read out the battle-cry slogans: “Strive for Excellence through Careful Design,” “Pursue Precision in Management and Craftsmanship,” and “Uphold Rigorous Quality Control to Create Premium Products.” Each representative who received a battle flag solemnly pledged, in resolute and unequivocal terms, “We will ensure the mission is accomplished!”

Finally, President Zhang Zhihua led the company’s management team in a solemn oath: “We will leave no room for excuses, race against time, and give our all to build the Xindafang International brand through technological leadership, uncompromising quality, and exceptional service. We will elevate ‘Made in China’ on the global stage and bring honor to our nation.” The resolute and powerful declaration vividly conveyed the unwavering determination and steadfast commitment of every level of the company to delivering the Kuwait project on time and to the highest standards, as well as their confident ambition to create the Xindafang International brand!

According to the overall project schedule, the first batch of equipment from Xindafang will complete final assembly in Kuwait by the end of this year and be officially put into operation around June next year. Chairman Zhang Zhihua stated: “Along the ‘Silk Road’ that stretches from China to Europe, Kuwait serves as a crucial hub where Eastern and Western civilizations converge. Xindafang aspires to harness the power of technological innovation to promote ‘Made in Henan’ on the global stage, thereby building bridges for the convergence of Eastern and Western civilizations along the Silk Road Economic Belt and contributing to the advancement of bridge construction worldwide.”

By stepping onto the global stage, Xin Dafang embodies China. When the Five-Star Red Flag flies proudly at bridge construction sites abroad, it is not only a source of pride for Xin Dafang—it is a source of pride for China’s private enterprises as well! Xin Dafang will rise to the occasion, fighting to uphold the Xin Dafang brand and to safeguard the honor of the Chinese nation!
