The Guangzhou–Zhanjiang High-Speed Railway has opened to traffic and will eventually connect directly to Hainan Island via the Zhanjiang–Haikou High-Speed Railway.

At around 10:00 a.m. on December 22, as the G9785 “Fuxing” high-speed train departed from Guangzhou Baiyun Station and sped toward Zhanjiang on the shores of the South China Sea, the Guangzhou–Zhanjiang High-Speed Railway officially commenced operations. In the future, the Guangzhou–Zhanjiang HSR will connect directly to the coastal regions of Guangxi and Hainan Island via the Hefei–Zhanjiang and Zhanjiang–Haikou HSRs.

According to reports, following the opening of the Guangzhou–Zhanjiang High-Speed Railway, the journey from Guangzhou Baiyun Station to Zhanjiang North Station will take as little as 1 hour and 32 minutes, significantly reducing the travel time and distance between the Beibu Gulf Urban Agglomeration and the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area.

The Guangzhou–Zhanjiang High-Speed Railway connects the cities of Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhaoqing, Yunfu, Yangjiang, Maoming, and Zhanjiang, with a design speed of 350 km/h and a total length of approximately 401 kilometers for the main line.

The much-anticipated Zhanjiang Bay Railway Subsea Tunnel has a total length of 9,640 meters, with trains traversing the tunnel in just about three minutes. Of this, the shield-tunneling section spans 7,551 meters, passing beneath the seabed of Zhanjiang Bay and through the urban area of Zhanjiang, making it China’s longest single-heading, completed shield-tunnelling project for a high-speed railway crossing a sea.
In terms of the rail network layout, the Guangzhou–Zhanjiang High-Speed Railway hub stands out in particular:
The line connects to Guangzhou, a national railway hub, and radiates into Central and North China via the Beijing–Guangzhou High-Speed Railway.
It connects to the Zhanjiang Hub in the west and, in the future, will provide direct high-speed rail links to Guangxi’s coastline and Hainan Island via the Hezhou–Zhanjiang and Zhanjiang–Haikou high-speed railways.
“With the opening of the Guangzhou–Zhanjiang High-Speed Railway, and the subsequent connection to the Hefei–Zhanjiang and Zhanjiang–Haikou high-speed railways, China’s coastal high-speed rail corridor will achieve full north-south connectivity from the Yangtze River Delta to the Beibu Gulf, further strengthening links among the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, the Beibu Gulf Urban Agglomeration, and the Hainan Free Trade Port, thereby forging a ‘golden corridor’ for balanced regional development,” said Peng Xiang, Chief Engineer of the Passenger Transport Department of China Railway Guangzhou Group.
For western Guangdong, this high-speed railway represents a groundbreaking milestone. With the line now in operation, Yangjiang, Maoming, and Zhanjiang will finally be connected by 350 km/h high-speed rail, marking a solid step forward toward Guangdong’s goal of providing 350 km/h service to every prefecture-level city in the province.
