Hunan’s Largest-Diameter Shield Tunnel Opens to Traffic
The Xiangya Road Tunnel in Changsha, Hunan Province, was completed and opened to traffic on July 5, enabling residents to cross the river in as little as five minutes. This is currently the largest-diameter shield tunnel in Hunan Province and also the largest tunnel project ever constructed beneath the Xiangjiang River. With this addition, Changsha’s urban area now boasts 14 river-crossing passages.

Citizen Li Lin attended the opening ceremony. He said that before the 1970s, residents of Changsha had to queue for ferries to cross the Xiang River, a journey that often took more than an hour. On days with inclement weather, ferry services would even be suspended. Today, the ongoing development of new river-crossing links not only makes travel more convenient for the public but also accelerates the integrated development of both banks of the Xiang River.
The Changsha Xiangya Road Yangtze River Crossing Project has a total length of 4.18 kilometers, with the river-crossing section spanning 1,429 meters. The total investment amounts to RMB 5.3278 billion, and the construction contractor is China Railway 14th Bureau Group Co., Ltd.
The complex surrounding environment and geological conditions posed significant challenges during construction. To address these challenges, the project team assembled a team of experts to conduct research and development, ultimately designing and building the “Xingsheng” tunnel boring machine—a state-of-the-art, multi-technology solution that overcame the numerous difficulties associated with tunneling beneath the Xiang River and significantly enhanced construction efficiency.
This shield tunneling machine is one of the most advanced intelligent tunneling rigs in China, with a diameter of 15.01 meters. It has successfully tunneled beneath the Xiangjiang River embankment on four occasions and traversed two high-risk zones—the riverbed’s fractured zone—on two separate occasions.
Zhang Yaxia, the project manager of the Xiangya Road project under China Railway 14th Bureau, stated that the project successfully overcame numerous complex geological challenges, including large-diameter, long-distance, high-strength rock strata beneath the river. The shield tunneling operation set a construction record of an average monthly advance of 180 meters and a peak monthly advance of 270 meters in such rock formations, thereby accumulating valuable experience for similar shield tunneling projects in river-bottom rock strata.
Inside the tunnel, the monitoring system, public-service system, and visualization system have been further enhanced to achieve intelligent interconnection, digital data acquisition, autonomous inspection, and comprehensive radar–vision monitoring across the entire tunnel after it opens to traffic. Moreover, a smart operations center has been established based on an IoT platform and digital twin technology, serving as the “intelligent brain” for tunnel operation and management.
Zhang Yaxia explained that the tunnel’s operation control and emergency rescue are managed under a “single-dashboard” system, enabling full-business visualization of real-time operational status, safety incidents, and equipment conditions.
