The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Passage Officially Opens to Traffic
On June 30, the world-class cross-sea cluster project, after seven years of arduous construction, was fully opened to traffic, seamlessly connecting the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Passage from a “Y” configuration to an “A” configuration and thereby unlocking the Golden Inner Bay. Shenzhen and Zhongshan have officially entered the “same-city era,” eliminating the need to detour via the Humen Bridge when traveling between the eastern and western banks of the Pearl River Estuary, with travel time now reduced to under 30 minutes.
The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link is a world-class, large-scale cross-sea infrastructure project that integrates bridges, artificial islands, tunnels, and underwater interchanges. With a total length of 24 kilometers, the bridge section alone spans approximately 17 kilometers. In April of this year, the bridge portion of the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link successfully passed a rigorous load test and was awarded the George Richardson Medal by the International Bridge Conference—a prize often referred to as the “Nobel Prize” of the bridge engineering community.

The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link is a mega-scale project characterized by highly complex and integrated construction technologies, presenting numerous challenges throughout the construction process. To address the technical difficulties associated with constructing the anchorages in the fully offshore marine mud zone of the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Bridge, the project team from CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Company proposed a self-balancing flexible cofferdam system comprising lock-type steel pipe piles, I-shaped sheet piles, and parallel steel wire cables. This innovative solution enabled the rapid island formation in just 45 days, setting a new precedent for the construction of large-span suspension bridge structures in wide-water environments.
“The anchorages, much like massive counterweights, are deeply embedded in the seabed. The two east–west anchorages jointly bear the tensile forces exerted by the bridge’s main cables and steel deck. To achieve this, we employed diaphragm wall construction to penetrate the moderately weathered bedrock beneath the bridge’s seabed, enabling the structure to rest on a solid bedrock foundation and thereby ensuring greater stability,” said Xiao Wenfu, Technical Director of the Shenzhen–Zhuhai Passage Project at CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Company.
“Every summer marks the peak season for tropical cyclones and typhoons in the Greater Bay Area. To ensure construction safety of the superstructure, it is imperative that the main bridge be closed before a typhoon strikes,” explained Yang Guangwu, a senior expert at China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group.
The design team innovatively adopted technologies such as “ultra-wide steel box-girder design,” “ultra-wide steel box-girder erection,” and “pre-tensioning of stay cables combined with phased welding of the main girder,” successfully overcoming the technical challenges of large deformations during main-girder erection and limited installation space for stay-cable tensioning, thereby ensuring the smooth closure of the Zhongshan Bridge.
In the construction of bridge pile foundation platforms, China Communications Second Public Works Bureau has adopted a prefabricated, modular design for drilling platforms, enabling on-demand assembly and disassembly with ease and significantly reducing material waste. Furthermore, through extensive innovation and optimization of construction technical solutions, the team has markedly improved both construction efficiency and quality, yielding demonstrable results.
The completion of the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link will significantly accelerate the overall development of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area. As core cities in the region and key nodes within the Greater Bay Area, Shenzhen and Zhongshan exert a direct and decisive influence on the prosperity of the entire bay area through their respective levels of development and global reach. With the vision of “building a world-class, sustainable cross-sea corridor and creating a century-long gateway project for the Greater Bay Area,” the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link has achieved numerous innovations and breakthroughs, thereby contributing the Shenzhen–Zhongshan model, Guangdong’s experience, and a Chinese solution to the global portfolio of cross-sea infrastructure projects.
