Smart Hub of the Green City, Smartly Shaping Vitality: Phase I of Zhengzhou Metro Line 12 Officially Enters Initial Operation
The first phase of Zhengzhou Metro Line 12 is scheduled to begin initial operations at 11:58 a.m. on December 20.
Phase I of Line 12 is a densification line within the Zhengzhou Metro network, primarily serving the Economic Development Zone and the Zhengdong New Area. The line follows an L-shaped alignment running north–south and east–west, with interchange connections to multiple other lines. Following its opening, the Zhengzhou Metro will operate 10 lines with a total network length of 277.7 kilometers, ranking 13th nationwide.

Phase I of Line 12 originates at Lianghu Station in the Economic Development Zone and terminates at Longzihu East Station in the Zhengdong New Area, with a total length of 16.538 kilometers, all underground. The line includes 11 stations: Lianghu Station, Futai East Station, Jingbei Fifth Road Station, Xizhou Station, Huanghe South Road Station, Children’s Hospital Station, Dongfeng East Road Station, High-Speed Rail Park Station, Longzihu West Station, Longzihu Station, and Longzihu East Station. Of these, six are transfer stations: Futai East Station and Children’s Hospital Station connect with Line 5; Xizhou Station connects with Line 3; Huanghe South Road Station and Longzihu Station connect with Line 1; and High-Speed Rail Park Station connects with Line 8 (under construction).

As a demonstration line for smart metro operations, Phase I of Line 12 focuses on four key areas of intelligent transformation—smart services, intelligent train operations, smart stations, and intelligent operation and maintenance—delivering cutting-edge technological experiences to passengers and further enriching the range of smart travel scenarios available to citizens. With an emphasis on “self-service as the primary mode, supplemented by human assistance,” all stations are equipped with self-service customer service centers and self-service ticketing kiosks, enabling fully automated ticketing processes. Stations also feature one-click station opening and closing, as well as 3D visualization, significantly enhancing service efficiency. The trains employ the highest international standard of fully automated driving technology, supporting fully autonomous mainline operation, automatic sleep and wake-up functions, and automated fault diagnosis. Moreover, more than ten core metro operating systems—including the communication system, rolling stock, and signaling system—are integrated with intelligent technologies, reducing the need for manual inspections and making equipment operation and maintenance more efficient, precise, and cost-effective.

The first phase of Line 12 adopts the design theme “Science-and-Technology Innovation Green Capital • Dynamic City,” emphasizing a sense of technological sophistication. By blending virtual and real elements and employing dynamic, interwoven spatial rhythms, the design enriches spatial layers to create a modern, spacious subway environment, while the infusion of “Intelligent Blue” further highlights its humanistic appeal. At Longzihu Station, the motif of a “circuit board” is incorporated, with the crisscrossing lines serving as key spatial design elements; at Children’s Hospital Station, a “plane-tree hollow” is created, with doorways arranged in staggered patterns to underscore the concept of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature; and at Dongfeng East Road Station, the station’s spatial framework draws inspiration from the mortise-and-tenon structure of traditional Chinese architecture, seamlessly integrating time-honored elements with contemporary materials.

Following the opening of Phase I of Line 12, the first trains at Lianghu Station and Longzihu East Station will depart simultaneously at 6:00 a.m. The last train from Lianghu Station to Longzihu East Station will depart at 11:00 p.m., while the last train from Longzihu East Station to Lianghu Station will depart at 11:30 p.m. On weekdays, the minimum headway is approximately 6 minutes; on weekends and public holidays, the headway is about 8 minutes. Fares will follow the network-wide distance-based fare structure, with a maximum single-trip fare of RMB 4 between Lianghu Station and Longzihu East Station. All stations support QR-code scanning for fare collection as well as facial-recognition boarding. The rolling stock consists of six-car Type B trains, capable of operating at a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Upon initial operation, a total of 13 trainsets were put into service to meet passenger demand. Every station is equipped with pedestrian underpasses or overpasses and features age-friendly amenities such as nursing rooms, child-specific washbasins, and accessible elevators, thereby comprehensively enhancing service quality and creating a warmer, more welcoming travel environment.

Following our dreams and thriving in the light of the sun, Zhengzhou Metro Group is committed to accelerating the development of a “city on rails.” We are deeply advancing our strategic layout of “Party building leadership, three core priorities, and governance-driven development,” while placing quality at the forefront. By strengthening design-led innovation and championing the spirit of craftsmanship, we are expediting the construction of a new, modern rail transit system that boasts exceptional quality, diversified industries, and sustainable growth. In doing so, we aim to best meet citizens’ aspirations for smooth, convenient travel and a better quality of life, thereby bolstering and empowering Zhengzhou’s drive toward modernization as a national central city.
