The New Western Land-Sea Corridor! Construction of the Pinglu Canal Commences Along Its Entire Length Today

According to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Department of Transport, construction on the Pinglu Canal—the flagship project for accelerating China’s drive to become a transportation powerhouse and a key component of the New Western Land-Sea Corridor—began in its entirety today (May 23). Upon completion, the Pinglu Canal will serve as the shortest, most cost-effective, and most convenient maritime access route from Southwest China.

The Pinglu Canal originates at the Pingtang River estuary in the Xijin Reservoir Area of Hengzhou City, Nanning, Guangxi, and runs via Luxu Town in Lingshan County, Qinzhou, along the Qinzhou River to the Beibu Gulf. With a total length of 134.2 kilometers, it is designed to handle an annual one-way throughput capacity of 89 million metric tons. The project primarily comprises navigation channels, shipping hubs, upgrades to water conservancy facilities, and the construction of ancillary crossing structures along the route, with a total estimated investment of approximately RMB 72.7 billion.

Upon completion, the Pinglu Canal will not only bolster Guangxi’s development but also become the shortest, most cost-effective, and most convenient maritime access route for China’s southwestern region. The diversion of freight volume from existing channels spurred by the canal’s construction is expected to reduce transportation costs by more than RMB 5.2 billion annually, thereby providing crucial support to the foreign trade economy and domestic freight demand in numerous Chinese provinces and vigorously promoting industrial development along the canal’s corridor.
