China’s First Medium- and Low-Speed Maglev Shield Tunnel Has Been Bored Through

BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) — According to China Railway Construction Corporation, on May 6, the domestically produced “Maglev No. 2” shield tunneling machine was successfully disassembled and lifted out from 27 meters underground at Terminal 3 of the Changsha Huanghua International Airport expansion and renovation project, marking the successful breakthrough of China’s first medium- and low-speed maglev tunnel constructed using the shield tunneling method.

According to Yang Linghang, the project manager from China Railway 14th Bureau, the maglev shield tunnel is being constructed by China Railway 14th Bureau on behalf of Changsha Rail Transit Group. It forms the section of the Changsha Maglev East Extension Line that connects to Terminal 3 at Changsha Huanghua International Airport and has a total length of approximately 2.85 kilometers.

“During construction, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) had to pass beneath the airport’s aviation fuel pipeline six times and traverse long stretches through the airport runway’s sensitive zone as well as soft-over-hard underlying strata—both of which pose significant risks. Consequently, stringent requirements for ground settlement control and safety risk management were imposed, making the project highly challenging,” said Yang Linghang. He added that, throughout TBM operations, the construction team proactively installed automated monitoring stations and leveraged automated monitoring technologies to continuously track and analyze TBM excavation progress in real time. This approach ensured that ground settlement in the airport runway’s sensitive zone remained at just 0.2 millimeters, achieving a “zero-settlement” underpass.

The Changsha Maglev East Extension Project, which connects to Terminal 3, is located in Huanghua Town, Changsha County, Changsha City. With a total length of approximately 4.45 kilometers, the line serves as a rapid trunk passenger transport corridor that provides point-to-point express connectivity between Changsha South Railway Station and Changsha Huanghua International Airport, thereby facilitating seamless air-rail intermodal transport. It plays a vital role in developing Changsha Huanghua International Airport into a comprehensive transportation hub.
