The difference between a girder launcher and a bridge erector

Gantry crane Bridge erectors are the primary lifting equipment used in the construction of highway, railway, and high-speed railway bridges. These cranes are also referred to as bridge cranes, girder cranes, or overhead bridge cranes. Bridge erectors are further classified as highway bridge erectors, conventional railway bridge erectors, and high-speed passenger-dedicated-line bridge erectors.

Gantry crane This is a type of lifting equipment belonging to the category of gantry cranes. It resembles a rack or frame, with the lifted load moving back and forth, primarily through the coordinated operation of winches and hoists, and the entire process is repeated along a set of rails. There are two main types of girder cranes: box-girder cranes and truss-type cranes. When the frequency of use is not particularly high, lattice girders can be used for lifting operations. The key features of this approach include low cost, light weight, high economic efficiency, and ease of installation and transportation.

The girder launcher lifts girders from the ground and places them onto the girder-launching gantry, after which the gantry transports the girders to the underside of the bridge-erection machine for integrated operations. Bridge-erection machines come in several types: depending on their traveling mechanism, some employ a driven-wheel configuration, while others use a guide-beam configuration. The primary function of the bridge-erection machine is to position the bridge using a crane and provide support in all four directions. During the erection of highway bridges, the main role of the bridge-erection machine is to deliver precast girders to the bridge piers.

The girder-lifting machine is similar to a bridge-erection machine: two cranes can simultaneously erect the bridge, and a truss structure can be used, which reduces costs and simplifies transportation and installation; the main girder structure is the same.

The difference between a bridge-erection machine and a girder-launching machine is as follows: the bridge-erection machine is used on road and bridge construction sites, while the girder-launching machine is used in bridge-erection yards; a girder transporter connects the two. The division of labor between the bridge-erection machine and the girder-launching machine is as follows: the bridge-erection machine is responsible for placing the bridge onto the piers, whereas the girder-launching machine is responsible for lifting the girders onto the launching gantry.
