What are the precautions for operating a tower crane, and what inspection tasks must be performed?

Tower-type Crane The operation of tower cranes is subject to extremely stringent requirements. What precautions must be taken during operation, and which inspections are absolutely essential—particularly for operators of tower-crane machinery? Today, we will take a detailed look at the key considerations in tower-crane operation and the essential inspection procedures.

It is essential to conduct thorough inspections of the operating components of tower cranes to prevent frequent crane accidents. To effectively mitigate such incidents, we must implement the following routine measures:

First, do not proceed with lifting if the command signals are unclear or if unauthorized commands are given; likewise, do not lift when the load weight is unknown or when the crane is operating beyond its rated capacity, or when the outriggers are not properly extended as required. Do not lift if the workpiece is not securely lashed or if it becomes unstable after being lashed. Do not lift if personnel or the hook are caught on the object or directly attached to the load. Do not lift if the wire rope is severely worn or broken, or if the safety devices have failed. Do not lift if the workpiece is buried in the ground or frozen. Do not suspend loads in poor lighting conditions, with obstructed visibility, or during adverse weather such as strong winds, heavy rain, or dense fog of level 6 or higher. Do not lift objects with sharp edges or corners that lack protective measures, objects longer than 6 meters, or wide objects without a guide rope!

At the same time, it is strictly prohibited to stand in the lifting area or to crawl under lifted loads; it is strictly prohibited to use your hands to adjust the height of objects being lifted by more than 0.5 meters; it is strictly prohibited to reach directly under lifted loads with your hands or feet to retrieve shims; and it is forbidden to use cranes to pull vehicles or impact devices.

While diligently carrying out the aforementioned tasks, it is equally important to conduct thorough inspections of tower crane components. Ensure that tower cranes and external elevators are erected and dismantled only by qualified, certified professional teams; strictly enforce compliance with regulations and require all operators, signalers, and drivers to hold valid certifications; rigorously prevent unauthorized erection and dismantling operations; and pay close attention to equipment protection and the proper functioning of safety devices—only in this way can the normal operation of the equipment be better assured!
