What causes a sharp increase in fuel consumption for beam-transport vehicles?

What causes a sharp increase in fuel consumption for beam-transport vehicles? Some operators have noticed that their vehicles are now consuming more fuel than before, with a corresponding drop in power. Yet they recently had the beam-transport trucks thoroughly serviced, consistently used premium-grade filters, and refueled at authorized gas stations. Despite all this, they still can’t figure out why fuel consumption has surged. We recommend that they have the vehicles inspected again to identify the root cause of the abnormal fuel consumption. Let’s take a closer look:

The beam-transporting truck driver drove the excavator to the local after-sales service center, where technicians used a diagnostic tool to connect to the vehicle for a thorough inspection. They discovered that the injector valve assembly exhibited slight wear; even this minimal wear can lead to abnormal fuel consumption.

The internal baffle of the girder transporter’s fuel tank has developed a weld crack, causing the baffle to become loose. During vehicle operation, diesel fuel impacts the baffle, resulting in friction between the baffle and the fuel tank and generating aluminum shavings. These shavings are then carried by the fuel into the fuel system.

Although the beam-transporting truck is equipped with high-grade filter elements, these filters can only remove aluminum particulates larger than 4 microns; particles smaller than 4 microns still make their way into the fuel injectors, causing wear on the injector valve components and resulting in high fuel consumption and insufficient power. It turns out that aluminum particulates are the root cause of injector damage. In fact, there are numerous cases where aluminum particulates have led to injector failure and a sharp increase in fuel consumption. The underlying reasons fall into two main categories: one is, as in the case of the driver mentioned above, the modification of the flatbed transport vehicle’s fuel tank heating system. During the modification, cutting of the fuel tank generates aluminum debris that is not thoroughly cleaned out, allowing these particles to enter the fuel and ultimately damage the truck’s fuel injectors.
