What is the difference between a bridge crane and an gantry crane?

Gantry crane What is the difference between it and a gantry crane?

  (1) The girder hoist is a piece of equipment characterized by significant variations in lifting capacity; with a self-weight of approximately 40 tonnes, it presents considerable challenges in disassembly, assembly, and control. In contrast, the gantry crane is a highly flexible, multi-hook, beamless operational system, featuring wide upright columns that serve as lifting hooks, along with multiple hooks and four or five suspension cables. When combined, the hooks and suspension cables can achieve equivalent lifting capacities of up to 10 metres (e.g., five-link, six-link, or seven-link configurations). Moreover, the upright columns can be interconnected via the hooks to form multi-link configurations such as five-link or six-link setups. Consequently, the girder hoist is relatively flexible and lightweight, whereas the gantry crane tends to be more complex in design.

  (2) Girder cranes are primarily used for dismantling small objects at construction sites, while gantry cranes are mainly employed for lifting and hoisting objects at height.

  (3) Both girder cranes and gantry cranes first dismantle the object or suspended load before installing new components; however, a distinctive operational sequence for girder cranes involves lifting the object into the space beneath the gantry crane’s girder bridge, then transporting the gantry crane—already installed on the upper girder bridge—out from under the bridge to perform the lifting operation, whereas the gantry crane is directly connected to the upper girder bridge. For larger-sized components—for example, heavy-duty three-axle hooks with a bearing capacity exceeding 60 kg/m²—girder cranes are not only incapable of handling such loads but also unable to hoist them up to the upper girder bridge, since the transport process itself is a mobile operation that requires dismantling once the component reaches the lower girder bridge. In contrast, gantry cranes typically proceed directly to the upper girder bridge to install the gantry crane’s supports and brackets.
