What are the causes of bridge-launching machine accidents?

With the development of railway construction, Bridge erector Its use is becoming increasingly frequent, and bridge-erection machine overturning accidents occur from time to time. The causes of these accidents can be attributed to the following aspects:

  1. Causes of the Subgrade and Track

Moreover, poor subgrade quality is the primary cause of bridge-launching-gantry overturning. Both new and existing lines exhibit, to varying degrees, subgrade hazards such as tomb pits, arc-shaped depressions, localized backfilling, random placement of large boulders or frozen-soil blocks, water saturation, and seepage from one side of the subgrade to the other. Each of these conditions has, on one or two occasions, resulted in a bridge-launching-gantry capsizing accident. In particular, the area between the abutment and the approach fill often experiences spurious compaction, making it a frequent accident hotspot. Poor track alignment—such as excessive superelevation on curve sections, which causes the gantry body to tilt and leads to overturning—or uneven track gradients, which can cause the gantry to slide and subsequently tip forward, also readily contribute to such incidents.

  2. Reasons attributable to the bridge erector itself

Cantilever bridge erectors require the girder to be suspended and threaded through the bridge substructure for alignment. During operation, the center of gravity is high and the axle loads are substantial, making rollover highly likely. Main single-girder and double-girder bridge erectors are more advanced than cantilever types, but their design still has shortcomings, such as excessive vehicle length, heavy weight, high axle loads, a high center of gravity, and the absence of protective devices. Once a bridge erector begins to tilt, the only option is to watch it roll over—there’s nothing else that can be done.

  3. Poor equipment maintenance

Bridge-erection machines are large, complex pieces of equipment with numerous operational procedures; accidents in which such machines overturn due to a failure in a critical component or an error in a key procedure do occur. For example, on a particular bridge-erection machine, the No. 2 carriage, owing to inadequate routine maintenance and ineffective braking, collided with the main gantry during beam transport, immediately derailing and tilting forward, resulting in severe economic losses and casualties.
