Bridge Erection Machine – Strictly Implement the Supervision System to Ensure Construction Quality

Railway Bridge erector The “Bridge Girder Erection Code” stipulates that the substructure construction contractor must provide the girder-erection contractor with documentation on the compaction status of the abutment fill. This requirement is based on the fact that most incidents of crane overturning during girder erection are attributable to problems with the abutment fill, such as the presence of cast-in-place stone blocks, frozen soil lumps, or failure to compact the fill in uniform layers—conditions that are well understood only by the substructure contractor and can be identified only through inspection by the girder-erection contractor.

However, in practice, the superior contracting entity often overlooks the information provided by the construction contractor for the track‑side works. This is because, for a long time, the quality inspection and evaluation criteria stipulated in China’s Railway Subgrade Inspection Standards have been based primarily on self‑inspection as the main management approach. While self‑inspection is a legitimate internal management tool, whether it is appropriate to rely solely on self‑inspection results for project handover merits careful consideration. To ensure that construction contractors strictly comply with the railway engineering technical standards promulgated by the state and the Ministry of Railways and to standardize the criteria for quality inspection and evaluation, railway subgrade construction must rigorously implement the engineering supervision system and strengthen inspection activities. Specifically: all items subject to inspection must be carried out under the participation or presence of the supervising engineer; otherwise, such inspections will not be recognized; and only when the preceding work process meets the required quality standards may the subsequent process commence. Only in this way can the quality of subgrade construction be guaranteed and potential subgrade hazards eliminated; only in this way can the information provided by the track‑side construction contractor be truly reliable and credible.

During bridge erection and girder-laying operations, the supervision system must be strictly enforced. The contracting unit responsible for erection and girder-laying shall be urged to rigorously comply with the “Code for Operation of Railway Bridge-Erecting Gantry Cranes,” the compaction regulations, the operating procedures for bridge-erection gantry cranes, and the safety management regulations, thereby ensuring the quality and safety of bridge erection and girder-laying works.

  Perform equipment maintenance properly.

A comprehensive maintenance system should be established for bridge-erection machines. Strict management procedures must be implemented at every stage—installation, commissioning, operation, storage, and sealing—to ensure that the equipment is consistently maintained in optimal technical condition. In addition, enhanced condition monitoring and fault diagnosis should be carried out to guarantee the safe and reliable operation of bridge-erection machines.
