What is a cantilever crane?

Cantilevered Crane There are vertical, wall-mounted, and balanced cranes.

① A column-mounted jib crane consists of a jib that can rotate about a fixed column mounted on a base, or it may comprise a single column and a single jib that is connected to a rotating column and pivots together with the vertical centerline of the base support. It is suitable for applications requiring relatively small lifting capacities and where the service area is circular or sector-shaped. It is typically used for gripping and handling workpieces such as machine tools.

Column-mounted jib cranes predominantly employ electric hoists as both the lifting and traveling mechanisms, with wire-rope electric hoists and manual chain hoists being used only rarely. Moreover, manual operation is typically reserved for slewing and horizontal travel, while electric operation is employed only when the lifting capacity is relatively large.

② The crane mounted on the wall is either a wall-mounted cantilever crane or a cantilever crane that can travel along an overhead track on the wall or other supporting structures.

Crane runways are used in workshops or warehouses with large spans and great building heights, and are particularly suitable when overhead cranes operate frequently close to the walls. Wall-mounted cranes are typically used in conjunction with girder or bridge cranes to serve a rectangular space adjacent to the wall, handling the lifting of small, lightweight items, while larger loads are handled by the girder or bridge cranes.

③ A balance crane, commonly known as a balance hoist, operates on the principle of a four-bar linkage to create a balanced system between the load and a counterweight. Equipped with various slings, it enables flexible and effortless lifting of loads in three-dimensional space. Lightweight and highly maneuverable, the balance crane is an ideal lifting device for handling small items. It is widely used in factory workshops for loading and unloading machine tools, transferring workpieces between process stations, operating automated and production lines, lifting sandboxes, assembling parts, as well as in railway stations, ports, warehouses, and other similar settings.
