The New Chengdu–Kunming Railway Fully Opens for Operation

According to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., on December 26, with the completion and opening of the Emei–Mianning section of the new Chengdu–Kunming Railway, the entire 915-kilometer line was fully connected and put into operation. Travel times from Chengdu to Xichang, Panzhihua, and Kunming have been significantly reduced, with the fastest journeys now taking just 3 hours, 5 hours, and 7.5 hours, respectively.

According to a responsible official from the China State Railway Group, the existing Chengdu–Kunming Railway stretches 1,096 kilometers and is a national Class I single-track line with a design speed of 80 kilometers per hour. Construction began in July 1958 and the line was completed and opened to traffic in July 1970. The沿线 terrain is geologically complex, earning it the nickname “Geological Museum,” and foreign experts once regarded these areas as off-limits for railway construction. The completion of the Chengdu–Kunming Railway has been hailed as one of the “three great miracles symbolizing humanity’s conquest of nature in the 20th century.” Since its opening, the railway has effectively served as a strategic transport corridor, providing robust logistical support for economic and social development. At the same time, as transportation demand has continued to grow, the capacity of the existing Chengdu–Kunming Railway has become increasingly saturated. To address this, the railway authorities have decided to build the New Chengdu–Kunming Railway along the existing line’s route.

The new Chengdu–Kunming Railway originates at Chengdu South Station and runs through Chengdu, Meishan, Leshan, the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, and Panzhihua in Sichuan Province, as well as the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture and Kunming in Yunnan Province, ultimately terminating at Kunming Station. It is a national Class I double-track electrified railway with a design speed of 160 km/h. The route traverses a highly complex geological setting, crossing the Minjiang, Qingyi, Dadu, and Jinsha Rivers, and passing through the Emei Mountains, the Greater and Lesser Liangshan ranges, and the Hengduan Mountains, posing enormous construction challenges. Since the project’s commencement, China State Railway Group has adopted a phased construction and phased operation approach in response to the engineering difficulties and transport capacity requirements, coordinating efforts among participating entities such as the China Railway Construction Corporation Electrification Bureau. Through innovative design concepts and the implementation of integrated air–space–ground intelligent surveying and mapping, the project has employed an extensive network of long tunnels and high-pier, large-span bridges to “straighten” the alignment, effectively mitigating various geological risks and overcoming globally challenging construction hurdles.
