World’s Tallest Bridge—Guizhou Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge Opens to Traffic
On September 28, the world’s tallest bridge—the Huajiang Canyon Bridge on the Liuzhi–Anlong Expressway—was officially completed, marking the full opening of the entire Liuzhi–Anlong Expressway.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is a key, control-level project on the Lu’an Expressway, connecting Guanling County in Anshun City, Guizhou Province, with Zhenfeng County in Qianxinan Prefecture. It derives its name from the fact that it spans the Huajiang Grand Canyon, often referred to as “the Earth’s Rift.” The bridge has a total length of 2,890 meters, with a main-span length of 1,420 meters and a vertical clearance of 625 meters from the bridge deck to the water surface. Upon completion, the bridge boasts the world’s longest main span among mountain bridges and the world’s greatest bridge height, earning it the reputation of being “number one in both horizontal and vertical dimensions.” Construction officially commenced on January 18, 2022, and the bridge was opened to traffic on September 28, 2025, after a construction period of 3 years and 8 months.
During the construction of the bridge, the Bridge Group and Highway Group under Guizhou Communications Investment Group overcame challenging conditions—including complex topography and geology as well as strong canyon winds—and achieved numerous technological breakthroughs in areas such as wind-resistant design and high-altitude construction. They developed a fourth-generation “smart cable-lifting system” that precisely aligns cables at an altitude of 600 meters, attaining millimeter-level construction accuracy; innovatively adopted a wind-resistant configuration featuring “upper and lower horizontal stabilizing plates combined with a central stabilizing plate,” with the lower stabilizing plate designed to resemble an aerial racing track; for the first time employed fiber Bragg gratings to monitor temperature, humidity, and stress along the entire main cable and integrated a dehumidification system to actively control cable moisture levels; and pioneered the use of forged-welded composite cable saddles, reducing saddle weight by 30%. These efforts resulted in 21 authorized patents, with several technical achievements incorporated into national bridge-construction standards, thereby providing the “Guizhou Communications Investment Solution” for bridge construction in mountainous regions.
The bridge itself is captivating, while the area beneath it is brimming with productive potential. Guizhou Communications Investment Industry Group is focusing on “Guizhou’s unique characteristics, Chinese style, and a global vision” to fully develop the integrated “bridge-tourism” model. Centered around the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge and the Yundu Service Area as two major tourism offerings, the bridge features an array of thrilling extreme sports—such as high-altitude swings, aerial racing tracks, and anchor-pylon climbing—as well as a rich variety of sightseeing attractions, including elevated walkways, panoramic elevators, stargazing water bars, and immersive water-screen light shows. Additional tourism facilities planned for the service area—including cable cars connecting the service area to the bridge abutments, a non-motorized amusement park, Triassic-themed guesthouses, educational research bases, and dedicated research centers—are set to open in succession. The completion of the bridge has not only transformed it into an integrated bridge-tourism complex that combines bridge sightseeing, bridge-based adventure experiences, and comprehensive tourism services, but also established it as a flagship model of Bridge-Tourism 3.0 and a world-class tourism landmark for Guizhou.
With the bridge spanning the river, a natural barrier has been turned into a smooth thoroughfare. Since the Huajiang Canyon Bridge was completed and opened to traffic, travel time between the Guanling and Zhenfeng banks has been reduced from two hours to just two minutes, dramatically improving regional transportation conditions. This has spurred the development of local industries such as agricultural product sales, homestays and catering, and cultural and creative products, injecting new momentum into the region’s economic and social development. Moreover, it will accelerate resource sharing and industrial collaboration among the urban agglomerations of Guiyang, Anshun, and Qianxinan Prefecture, thereby providing strong impetus for Guizhou’s integration into the construction of the New Western Land-Sea Corridor.
