Li Qiang Attends the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Lower Yarlung Zangbo River Hydropower Project and Declares Its Official Commencement
Linzhi, Tibet, Xinhua, July 19 — A groundbreaking ceremony for hydropower projects on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River was held in Linzhi City, Tibet Autonomous Region, on the morning of July 19. Li Qiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, attended the ceremony and officially declared the commencement of the projects.
On the morning of July 19, the groundbreaking ceremony for the downstream hydropower project on the Yarlung Zangbo River was held in Nyingchi City, Tibet Autonomous Region. Li Qiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, attended the ceremony and officially declared the project to have commenced. At around 9:00 a.m. that day, the groundbreaking ceremony was held at the dam site of the Milin Hydropower Station in Nyingchi City. Representatives from the National Development and Reform Commission, the project owner China Yajiang Group, and the participating research, testing, and construction entities—China Power Construction Corporation—along with leading officials of the Tibet Autonomous Region, delivered speeches in turn.
Li Qiang announced the commencement of the hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, officially marking the start of construction.
Wu Zhenglong presided over the groundbreaking ceremony.
Officials from relevant departments of the central and state organs, representatives of pertinent central enterprises, members of the Expert Advisory Committee on Hydropower Project Construction in the Lower Yarlung Zangbo River Basin, as well as representatives from the project’s research, testing, and construction units and local community representatives, attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
The hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River is located in Nyingchi City, Tibet Autonomous Region. The project primarily employs channel straightening and tunnel diversion for water conveyance, with plans to construct five cascade power stations at a total investment of approximately RMB 1.2 trillion. The primary objective of the project is to transmit surplus power to other regions while also meeting local electricity demand in Tibet.
