Smart Orange Line, Carrying Dreams on the Move: Phase I of Zhengzhou Metro Line 10 Opens for Service

Phase I of Zhengzhou Metro Line 10 opened for service today (September 28, 2023) at 11:58 a.m.
Phase I of Line 10 is a metropolitan express line that radiates from Zhengzhou’s central urban area to the western new city, connecting areas such as Xingyang, the Zhongyuan West Road commercial district, and the old city. It also links two major transportation hubs—Zhengzhou Railway Station and Zhengzhou West Station—making travel more convenient and efficient for passengers. Following its opening, Zhengzhou Metro now operates nine lines with a total network length of 261.17 kilometers, ranking 13th nationwide.

Phase I of Line 10 runs from Zhengzhou West Station to Zhengzhou Railway Station, with a total length of 21.849 kilometers and 12 underground stations: Zhengzhou West Station, Lishangyin Park Station, Miaowang Station, Liuhu Station, Municipal Party School Station, Zhengzhou No. 1 High School Station, Xiliuhu Park South Station, Ersha Station, City Central Hospital Station, Lucheng Square Station, Medical College Station, and Zhengzhou Railway Station. Among these, five stations serve as transfer hubs: Municipal Party School Station for transfers to Line 14; City Central Hospital Station for transfers to Line 5; and Lucheng Square Station, Medical College Station, and Zhengzhou Railway Station for transfers to Line 1.

Phase I of Line 10 is Zhengzhou’s first fully automated metro line. By leveraging advanced technologies such as computing, communications, and system integration, its core systems—including communications, signaling, platform screen doors, and rolling stock—are seamlessly interconnected to enable coordinated control and emergency response coordination, thus realizing fully automated operation. In light of the unique characteristics of a fully automated system, 50 integrated operational scenarios and corresponding response strategies have been developed and tested, encompassing 22 normal-operation scenarios such as train approach and station stopping, 11 fault scenarios involving vehicle or equipment malfunctions, and 17 emergency scenarios like platform emergency shutdowns. The fully automated system offers outstanding advantages—enhanced safety, greater efficiency, improved energy savings, cost-effectiveness, and higher service levels—thereby significantly elevating the safety and operational efficiency of the metro.

The interior design theme for Phase I stations on Line 10 is “Western Blossom, Global Connectivity, International Footprint, and Future Vision.” The design adopts a modern, minimalist style, with white and gray as the primary color scheme complemented by the line’s signature orange—a hue that conveys warmth and approachability. Iconic cultural walls featuring themes such as “Five Thousand Years of Huaxia Civilization” and “The Magnificent City of Zhengzhou” highlight the city’s unique cultural identity. Together, these elements create a streamlined, bright, airy, and comfortable integrated urban underground public space that exudes a contemporary aesthetic, thereby better showcasing the city’s refined taste and distinctive charm.

Following the opening of Phase I of Line 10, the first trains at four stations—Zhengzhou West Station, Zhengzhou Railway Station, Miaowang Station, and Li Shangyin Park Station—will depart simultaneously at 6:00 a.m. The last trains will run at 10:00 p.m. from Zhengzhou West Station to Zhengzhou Railway Station and at 10:35 p.m. from Zhengzhou Railway Station to Zhengzhou West Station. On weekdays, the minimum headway will be approximately 6 minutes, while on weekends and public holidays it will be about 7 minutes. Fares will continue to be calculated on a distance-based, network-wide fare system, and all stations will support QR-code scanning for gate passage as well as facial-recognition boarding. The rolling stock consists of Type A trains in six-car formations, with a maximum operating speed of 100 km/h; upon initial operation, a total of 14 trainsets will be put into service to meet passenger demand. More than ten service facilities have been further upgraded, including mother-and-baby rooms, colorful passageways, stair handrails of varying heights, and self-service ticketing kiosks. In-vehicle displays provide real-time information such as passenger density in each carriage and the locations of station escalators and moving walkways. Eight stations are equipped with unmanned customer-service centers that offer services like ticket and card processing, creating a more comfortable and smarter travel experience for passengers.
Steady progress leads to long-term success—let us move ever closer to beauty! Zhengzhou Metro Group remains steadfast in its mission to build a “city on rails,” vigorously advancing its strategic layout of “Party building as the guiding force, three core pillars in tandem, and governance-driven development.” The Group is accelerating the construction of a new, modern rail transit system that is distinguished by exceptional quality, diversified industries, and sustainable growth, thereby maximizing the economic and social benefits of the metro network, delivering higher-quality travel services to the public, and injecting stronger momentum into the city’s modernization.
