With a design speed of 350 km/h, the Guangzhou–Shantou High-Speed Railway officially opened for service today.

At 8:30 a.m. on September 26, 2023, the G9726 Fuxing smart EMU departed from Guangzhou East Station and arrived punctually at Shanwei Station 73 minutes later, marking the official opening and operation of the newly built Guangzhou–Shanwei section of the Ningbo–Guangzhou High-Speed Railway (hereinafter referred to as the Guangshan HSR).

At around 8:00 a.m., Guangzhou East Station was bustling with crowds, and the platform where the inaugural G9726 train was scheduled to depart was swarming with media, creating an exceptionally lively atmosphere. The train is powered by a Fuxing-series intelligent EMU, its sleek red livery providing a striking backdrop that drew passengers eager to snap photos as souvenirs.

The Guangzhou–Shanwei High-Speed Railway originates at Xintang Station in Zengcheng District, Guangzhou, passes through Huizhou City and the Shenzhen–Shantou Cooperation Zone, and connects to Shanwei Station in downtown Shanwei. The main line has a total length of 200 kilometers and is operated at a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour. During the initial phase of operation, up to 29 pairs of high-speed train sets ran daily.

The Guangzhou–Shantou High-Speed Railway connects to Guangzhou East Station via the Guangzhou–Shenzhen Lines 3 and 4 at Xintang Station, and achieves effective connectivity with the Ganzhou–Shenzhen High-Speed Railway through the Boluo–Huizhou North Station connecting line and the Huizhou South–Zhongkai Station connecting line.

Upon learning of the upcoming opening of the Guangzhou–Shantou High-Speed Railway, passenger Mr. Hong has been repeatedly refreshing the 12306 railway app these past few days.

“I’m thrilled to have finally bought a ticket! I’m from Shanwei and work in Guangzhou. I’ve been following this rail line every step of the way—from its initial planning and construction to its recent opening. In the past, whether departing from Guangzhou East Station or Guangzhou South Station and heading to Shanwei Station or Lufeng Station, the journey would take at least two hours and change. Now that travel times have been cut significantly, it’s much more convenient for both tourism and visiting family, and it’s also a huge boost for the development of my hometown,” Mr. Hong said happily.

The inaugural train has drawn many passengers who have made a special trip to “check in.”

To experience the inaugural train, Mr. Li, a traveler, made a special trip from Shenzhen to Guangzhou this morning. “I’ve been following this route for a long time. I love traveling and am also a railway enthusiast. The Guangzhou–Shanwei High-Speed Railway makes it convenient for us office workers to visit the Chaoshan region on weekends or during holidays to enjoy its delicious cuisine, giving us more travel options and enabling us to reach Shanwei more quickly.”

“We’re ‘old railway folks’—my daughter even bought our tickets for us yesterday. As passengers getting to experience the inaugural run, we’re absolutely delighted.” Mr. Chen, who has been retired for many years, raised his smartphone, and the camera slowly panned from inside the carriage out the window. Lush green trees, scattered residential homes, a blue sky dotted with white clouds—the picturesque scenery along the route was perfectly captured through the train window. “I’ve heard that several station buildings have particularly beautiful designs, so we’re planning to go take a look, too. The railway has changed so dramatically over the years—that’s something we feel most keenly,” Mr. Chen remarked with deep emotion.

“Excuse me, are you the on-board mechanic? Could you please sign my drawing here?” Seventeen-year-old railway enthusiast Xiao Li held up his hand-painted depiction of the front of a Fuxing-series intelligent EMU, asking the onboard staff to take a moment to sign it as a memento. “Today’s journey is truly memorable. Riding this train feels remarkably quiet and smooth!”

On the inaugural train, railway staff performed the Shanwei folk song “Long Ah Long, Riding Horse to Haifeng,” which kicked off the inaugural celebration and cultural performances. Together with passengers, they witnessed the momentous occasion of the opening of the Guangzhou–Shanwei High-Speed Railway.

In keeping with the unique characteristics of the Guangzhou–Shanwei High-Speed Railway, the dining car features display boards in the Shanwei dialect, such as “Mengmeng lai shi cha jia fan (Come quickly to enjoy tea and a meal),” “Li hao (Hello),” and “Longlong jin (Very good),” making it easy for passengers to take photos and check in. The onboard catering service offers a range of locally inspired specialties, including Chaoshan-style braised delicacies, chicken legs, duck wings, licorice snacks, preserved plums, and salted yellow skin fruit.

“350 kilometers per hour!” The real-time speed display sent the atmosphere in the carriage into a frenzy. Media reporters and passengers alike raised their cameras to capture this thrilling moment.

Following the opening of the Guangzhou–Shanwei High-Speed Railway, travel times from Shanwei Station to Guangzhou East Station and Shenzhen North Station will be as short as 73 and 70 minutes, respectively, integrating Shanwei into the one-hour commuting circle of the Guangzhou–Shenzhen metropolitan area.

The opening and operation of the Guangzhou–Shantou High-Speed Railway has added a rapid passenger transport corridor to the revolutionary old areas of eastern Guangdong, greatly facilitating travel for residents along the line. This development is of paramount importance in helping these old areas accelerate their integration into the construction of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area and in promoting balanced regional economic and social development.
