The Yinchuan–Lanzhou High-Speed Railway Fully Opens Today, Connecting Yinchuan and Lanzhou in Under Three Hours
At 9:20 a.m. today (December 29), the D8937 high-speed train departed slowly from Yinchuan Station in Ningxia bound for Lanzhou in Gansu Province, marking the official opening and operation of the 431-kilometer-long Yinchuan–Lanzhou High-Speed Railway.
The Yinchuan–Lanzhou High-Speed Railway runs from Yinchuan in Ningxia in the north to Lanzhou in Gansu in the south, with a total length of 431 kilometers and a design speed of 250 kilometers per hour. The 212-kilometer Yinchuan–Zhongwei section was opened to traffic on December 29, 2019; the 219-kilometer Zhongwei–Lanzhou section, of which 46 kilometers lie within Ningxia, broke ground in June 2017 and has now completed all construction works as well as joint commissioning and trial operations.
The Zhongwei–Lanzhou section of the Yinlan High-Speed Railway, which has now opened to traffic, runs from Zhongwei South Station, through Zhongwei City in Ningxia and Baiyin City and Lanzhou City in Gansu Province, before connecting to Lanzhou West Station on the Lanzhou–Urumqi High-Speed Railway. The line has a total length of 219 kilometers and is designed for speeds of 250 kilometers per hour. A total of seven stations are planned along the route: Zhongwei South, Beitán, Pingchuan West, Jingyuan North, Baiyin South, Qinwangchuan, and Lanzhou West. Among these, Zhongwei South and Lanzhou West are existing stations, while the remaining stations are newly built.
In the initial phase of operation of the Yinchuan–Lanzhou High-Speed Railway, the railway authorities will schedule passenger trains between Yinchuan and Lanzhou according to regular, weekend, and peak-hour services, with up to 15 pairs of high-speed train sets running daily. Specifically, four pairs will operate between Lanzhou and Yinchuan, and one pair between Lanzhou and Zhongwei. The fastest travel times from Lanzhou to Yinchuan and to Zhongwei will be 2 hours and 56 minutes and 1 hour and 42 minutes, respectively—shortened by 5 hours and 26 minutes and 4 hours and 4 minutes compared with pre-opening schedules.
The Yinlan High-Speed Railway is a vital component of China’s “Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal” high-speed rail network, specifically the Beijing–Lanzhou corridor. Its full-line opening to service has further enhanced the railway network in western China, including Gansu and Ningxia provinces, greatly facilitating travel for people of all ethnic groups along the route. It also plays a crucial role in promoting balanced regional development and comprehensively advancing rural revitalization.
