The Zhengzhou–Chongqing High-Speed Railway Fully Opens Today
On June 20, 2022, the Xiangyang East–Wanzhou North section of the Zhengzhou–Chongqing High-Speed Railway was officially opened to traffic, marking the full completion and operation of the railway—the latest high-speed passenger corridor connecting China’s southwestern region with the rest of the country. From now on, the fastest travel time from Zhengzhou to Chongqing will be just 4 hours and 23 minutes, further strengthening connectivity between the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration and the Chengdu–Chongqing Twin-City Economic Circle.
The Zhengzhou–Chongqing High-Speed Railway forms the left stroke of Henan Province’s “rice”–shaped high-speed rail network, running from Zhengzhou in the north to Chongqing in the south and passing through Henan, Hubei, and Chongqing. The line has a total length of 1,068 kilometers. Specifically, the Wanzhou North–Chongqing section and the Zhengzhou East–Xiangyang East section were opened to traffic on November 28, 2016, and December 1, 2019, respectively. It is an important component of China’s “Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal” high-speed rail network, serving as a key segment of both the Yangtze River corridor and the Hohhot–Nanning corridor.
The 434-kilometer Xiangyang East–Wanzhou North section, which opened on June 20, was designed to a maximum speed of 350 km/h and is operated on a regular basis at 310 km/h. The route passes through Xiangyang, Jingmen, and Yichang cities in Hubei Province, the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, and Wushan, Fengjie, Yunyang, and Wanzhou districts in Chongqing Municipality, with 10 stations: Xiangyang East, Nanzhang, Baokang County, Shennongjia, Xingshan, Badong, Wushan, Fengjie, Yunyang, and Wanzhou North. Once the entire line is fully connected, the Zhengzhou–Chongqing High-Speed Railway will link numerous renowned tourist attractions, including Shaolin Temple on Mount Song, the ancient site of Gulongzhong in Xiangyang, the Shennongjia Primeval Forest, Baidicheng in Fengjie, and the Greater and Lesser Three Gorges in Wushan, thereby establishing a fast, high-speed rail corridor that connects the Central Plains, Central China, and the Southwest region.
“I often go to Shennongjia to take photos; it used to take at least eight or nine hours by car. Now that the Zhengzhou–Chongqing High-Speed Railway is fully operational, I can set out in the morning and be on the summit of Shennongding by afternoon to capture the sunset,” said Shi Yaochen, a photography enthusiast.
Following the full opening of the Zhengzhou–Chongqing High-Speed Railway, the railway authorities will schedule train services according to regular, weekend, and peak-period timetables. On the Xiangyang–Wanzhou section, as many as 106 high-speed train sets will operate on a single day, with direct high-speed trains connecting Chongqing with Beijing, Tianjin, Taiyuan, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, and other major cities. The fastest travel times from Beijing, Zhengzhou, and Wuhan to Chongqing will be 6 hours and 46 minutes, 4 hours and 23 minutes, and 4 hours and 57 minutes, respectively.
