New Pattern Emerges for Zhengzhou’s Railway Passenger Transport Hub: Zhengzhou Airport Station Opens for Service on the 20th

According to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., as reported by The Paper, on June 20, after more than four years of construction, Zhengzhou Airport Station—a passenger transport hub connecting the Zhengzhou–Chongqing High-Speed Railway, the Zhengzhou–Fuyang High-Speed Railway, and the Zhengzhou–Kaifeng Intercity Railway—will open for service, thereby establishing a new railway passenger transport hub in Zhengzhou alongside Zhengzhou Station and Zhengzhou East Station. Following the station’s opening, the railway authorities have scheduled a total of 121 passenger trains to call at the station for passenger services.

Zhengzhou Airport Station, formerly known as Zhengzhou South Station, is located in the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Comprehensive Experimental Zone and broke ground in November 2017. To enhance the station’s locational clarity and further improve passenger convenience, the local government and the railway authorities, following consultation, decided to rename the station Zhengzhou Airport Station effective May 31, 2022.

Zhengzhou Airport Station is equipped with a total of 32 arrival and departure tracks and 30 passenger platform faces, with three parallel station areas: the Zhengzhou–Chongqing High-Speed Railway area, the Zhengzhou–Fuyang High-Speed Railway area, and the Zhengzhou–Kaifeng Intercity Railway area. Prior to full completion and opening for operation, a “build-and-operate-in-paralle” approach was adopted, with only through-train technical operations being handled. Specifically, on December 1, 2019, tracks 5 through 8 were opened, enabling through service on the Zhengzhou–Chongqing and Zhengzhou–Fuyang high-speed railways; on December 12, 2020, tracks 24 through 27 were opened, facilitating through service on the Zhengzhou–Kaifeng intercity railway; on October 12, 2021, tracks 1, 2, 10, 21, 22, 31, and 32 were opened, allowing for track transfers within the same station area; and by June 2022, all construction at the station had been completed.

The architectural design of the Zhengzhou Airport Station building is inspired by the motif of “Cranes Dancing Across the Nine Provinces,” drawing on cultural elements from the Spring and Autumn–period bronze vessel known as the “Lotus-and-Crane Square Pot” unearthed in Xinzheng City, the area where the station is located. The station’s main façade incorporates the curved top profile and the wing-like configuration of the pot. The station complex comprises, from top to bottom, an elevated waiting level, a platform level, an arrival–departure hall level, and a metro transfer level. The station building itself covers a gross floor area of 149,000 square meters, while ancillary facilities—including logistics corridors, service buildings, and parking areas—span an additional 234,000 square meters.

During the construction of the station, we adhered to people-oriented principles and a commitment to passenger service, while embracing technological innovation and low-carbon, environmentally friendly practices, thereby creating a modern, intelligent, integrated service hub. We innovated the overall layout by centering on the high-speed rail station building and developing four supporting hubs: air–rail intermodal transfer, high-speed rail logistics, long-distance passenger transport, and tourism distribution. This enables seamless transfers among multiple modes of transportation, including high-speed rail, intercity rail, air travel, and metro, fully realizing a “convenient hub” that promotes smooth integration and efficient travel. We also pioneered advanced energy-saving technologies, constructing a 66,000-square-meter platform canopy with exposed concrete and rain-shed features that embody low-carbon construction and lightweight maintenance, and deploying constant-temperature and zone-based climate-control systems to provide passengers with a comfortable, consistently temperate waiting environment, thus creating an “eco-friendly, low-carbon hub” that is both technologically advanced and warmly inviting. Furthermore, we introduced full lifecycle management and BIM digital technology, integrating digital solutions to drive smart construction, and systematically integrating intelligent passenger services with production control platforms to build a “smart hub” that is both intelligent and efficient, and operated using cutting-edge technology.

Prior to the station’s opening and operation, China State Railway Group meticulously coordinated with relevant units, rigorously adhered to all applicable regulations and standards, and conducted comprehensive inspection and acceptance, safety assessments, and integrated optimization and adjustments of all specialized equipment at Zhengzhou Airport Station. In addition, pre-employment training in operational procedures and service etiquette, along with emergency response drills, were provided to station staff, thereby ensuring that the station is fully prepared for safe and efficient operation upon its inauguration.

The opening and operation of Zhengzhou Airport Station are of great significance for further enhancing Zhengzhou’s role as a railway passenger transport hub, facilitating travel for the general public, and promoting the development of the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Comprehensive Experimental Zone and the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration.
