Jinan–Zhengzhou High-Speed Railway Achieves “Simultaneous Rotation of Two Bridges,” Overcoming a Critical Construction Milestone

On April 20, at the command “Begin rotation,” the (64+64)-meter T-shaped rotary bridges for the Jinan up and down connecting lines of the Ji’nan–Zhengzhou High-Speed Railway, constructed by China Railway Tenth Bureau, began to rotate in the same direction at a slow pace. Within 100 minutes, the bridges were precisely positioned, successfully spanning both the Beijing–Shanghai Line and the Shuitun–Baimashan Line. This marks the first dual-rotation rotary bridge project on the Ji’nan–Zhengzhou Railway, laying a solid foundation for opening the track-laying corridor along the Shandong section of the line and overcoming a critical milestone toward the goal of commissioning.

This rotational bridge is a super-large connecting line bridge for the new Ji’nan–Zhengzhou Railway, comprising two parallel T-shaped rigid-frame girders with variable girder heights. The rotation involves different angles and speeds, and the rotating structure consists of a lower turntable, spherical hinges, an upper turntable, and a rotation traction system. The bridge has a length of 128 meters, with each single span weighing 6,500 tons. The construction adopted a “build-first, rotate-second” approach: the bridge was first constructed in parallel with the existing railway lines, and then rotated into position to connect with the piers on both sides. The Beijing–Shanghai Line and the Shuizhou–Baihe Line experience heavy, frequent train traffic, with an average of one train passing every 20 minutes.

According to Jin Zenglu, Chief Engineer of the Jizheng Railway Project Department of China Railway Tenth Bureau, which is responsible for this construction, the rotary bridge in question represents a “dual-bridge simultaneous rotation” in railway engineering—a first in railway bridge construction due to its unique rotation angles and speeds—and marks a major breakthrough in high-speed rail project development. To ensure the smooth execution of the rotation, the contractor implemented BIM-based modeling and management in advance, rigorously controlling the quality of incoming materials and installation accuracy for specialized components such as bearing seats, sliding tracks, and support legs, as well as the quality of concrete and the prestressing tensioning of the box girders. Prior to the rotation, comprehensive weight-testing and precise counterweight adjustments were carried out to ensure balanced load distribution on the box girder, thereby guaranteeing the successful completion of the rotation.

According to reports, the Jinan–Zhengzhou High-Speed Railway is a trunk high-speed rail line planned and constructed by Shandong Province and Henan Province, running from Zhengzhou East Station to Jinan West Station. It forms part of Shandong’s “four horizontal and six vertical” integrated transportation corridor and is also a key component of Henan’s “rice-character” high-speed rail network strategy. The Shandong section of the Jinan–Zhengzhou Railway has a total length of 170 kilometers. Upon completion, the travel time between Jinan and Zhengzhou will be reduced to just 1.5 hours, greatly facilitating travel for residents in both cities and boosting economic development in relevant regions across central and eastern China.
