Xin Dafang Powers the Smooth Launch of Construction on the World’s Largest Single-Unit Floating Wind Power Platform

In mid-July, the launching ceremony for the “Mingyang Tiancheng,” the world’s largest single-unit 16.6 MW floating wind power platform developed by Xindafang, was held at the CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard, marking a new chapter in humanity’s exploration of marine energy. The “Mingyang Tiancheng” is independently designed and built by Mingyang Group, a global leader in offshore wind power. It features two tower sections arranged in a V-shape and is equipped with two 8.3 MW offshore wind turbines, achieving a total capacity of 16.6 MW. The platform is suitable for deployment in a wide range of global waters with water depths exceeding 35 meters. Its rotor tips reach a maximum height of 219 meters, with an overall span of approximately 369 meters, making it the world’s largest dual-rotor floating wind turbine. Its floating foundation adopts a Y-shaped design, consisting of three buoyant pontoons, concrete arms, and connecting components. Measuring 117 meters in length, 105 meters in width, and 39.5 meters in height, the foundation weighs over 8,000 tons—making it a world-first that has no precedent or successful case to draw upon. As a benchmark enterprise in China’s wind power equipment sector, Xindafang pioneered the domestically developed QLY series cranes specifically for mountainous wind power projects, innovating green construction methods for mountain wind farms and successfully driving the sustainable, stable, and healthy development of this industry. Leveraging its leading technologies and extensive experience in the wind power field, Xindafang has smoothly undertaken the project to build a production line for ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) precast components for Mingyang’s floating wind turbine foundations. The precast concrete components for the floating foundation are characterized by “extra-large dimensions, extremely thin cavities and wall thicknesses, exceptionally high fluidity and strength of UHPC, and extremely stringent precision requirements.” To ensure the smooth execution of the project, Xindafang established a dedicated Mingyang project team and collaborated closely with the “Mingyang Tiancheng” project team to develop the world’s first production-line equipment for manufacturing ultra-large-volume, thin-walled, large-cavity UHPC precast components. This enabled the successful production of floating foundation concrete precast parts that meet the demanding requirements of extra-large size, ultra-thinness, ultra-precision, and specialized performance, thereby laying a solid foundation for the successful launch of the “Mingyang Tiancheng.” As economically viable onshore wind resources become increasingly scarce, the global wind farm development trend has shifted from land to sea. In the context of the worldwide promotion and advocacy of clean energy, Xindafang will actively align with national strategies, accelerate the cultivation of new productive forces, boldly take on challenges, and embrace innovation, providing more technological and equipment support for the large-scale, deep-sea development of China’s offshore wind power. Project Highlights: The “Mingyang Tiancheng” is independently developed by Mingyang Group, a global leader in offshore wind power, and represents multiple world-first innovations. Its floating foundation is the first in the world to be constructed using ultra-high-performance concrete with a compressive strength exceeding 115 MPa; the pontoon design featuring a “glass fiber shell + XPS core + protective coating” is also a world-first. Additionally, the wing-shaped dual-tower, dual-generator, dual-rotor configuration, as well as the use of cable-stayed systems, are all world-firsts. Furthermore, it is the world’s first wind turbine to adopt a downwind design, which can reduce the ultimate load on the support structure by approximately 40%. ● First use of ultra-high-performance concrete with a compressive strength exceeding 115 MPa ● First adoption of a pontoon design featuring a glass fiber shell, XPS core, and protective coating ● First implementation of a wing-shaped dual-tower, dual-generator, dual-rotor configuration ● First use of a cable-stayed system ● World’s first wind turbine employing a downwind design

The design scheme for the 60-meter-span mobile formwork system for Section A2 of the Third Eastern Passage in Xiamen, Xin Dafang, has successfully passed review.

The Xiamen Third Eastern Passage is an important component of the expressway connecting lines in the National Highway Network Plan. Its completion will not only enhance Xiamen’s urban transportation network but also further stimulate regional economic development, playing a significant role in advancing China’s drive to become a “transportation powerhouse” and in building new national logistics corridors under the Belt and Road Initiative. The project features a 15.4-kilometer-long cross-sea bridge along its entire route, with Section A2 accounting for 4.14 kilometers. This section serves as the “key” link between the main line and the Xiang’an branch—the very segment where the Oucuo interchange is located. Xin Dafang will supply four DXZ60/3500 downward-type mobile formwork bridge-launching machines (hereinafter referred to as “mobile formwork”) for this section. Given the extremely complex working conditions, the project poses substantial challenges to construction equipment. To address these challenges, Xin Dafang established a dedicated Xiamen Project Task Force, employing multiple technical approaches to optimize the design. As a result, they successfully overcame a host of high-risk, high-difficulty technical hurdles—including offshore operations, varying girder widths, large and variable pier spans, small horizontal and vertical curve radii, heavy self-weight of box girders, difficulties in formwork assembly, formwork opening, and span-crossing—ultimately developing a mobile formwork system fully tailored to the project’s specific requirements. On June 21, guided by a commitment to continuous improvement and a strong sense of responsibility toward the project, Xin Dafang convened an expert review meeting on the “Design Proposal for the 60-meter-Span Mobile Formwork System for Section A2 of the Xiamen Third Eastern Passage.” More than 20 industry experts were specially invited to evaluate and refine the design proposal. The review panel comprised Professor-level Senior Engineers Fu Jinhai from China Railway Tenth Bureau Group Co., Ltd., Liu Jiawu from Shijiazhuang Railway University, Wang Huaihai from China Railway Fourth Bureau Group Co., Ltd., Le Feng from China Railway Seventeenth Bureau Group Co., Ltd., and Yan Haopeng, a Senior Engineer from CCCC Second Navigation Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd. In addition, representatives from CCCC First Public Works Bureau Group Co., Ltd., CCCC First Navigation Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd., CCCC Highway Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd., CCCC Tianjin Port & Harbor Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd., and CCCC Tianjin Port & Harbor Engineering Design Institute Co., Ltd. also attended the meeting. Chen Hao, Vice Chairman of the company, Shen Yi, Executive General Manager, Chen Deli, Chief Engineer of the National Enterprise Technology Center, Zhao Fangxing, Deputy Chief Engineer, Dai Yu, General Manager of the Lifting Business Unit, along with members of the project team, all participated in the review meeting. The meeting was chaired by Chen Hao, who jointly elected Professor-level Senior Engineer Fu Jinhai as the chair of the expert review panel. Chen Hao, on behalf of Xin Dafang, extended a warm welcome and heartfelt gratitude to all the experts and industry colleagues who had traveled from afar, expressing his hope that they would share their insights and offer valuable advice. He noted that Xin Dafang has deep ties with Xiamen: back in 1999, Xin Dafang provided a 40-meter, 1,000-ton mobile formwork system for the Xiamen Haicang Bridge—the first domestically developed mobile formwork system in China; in 2007, it supplied a segmental-erection bridge-launching machine for the Xiamen Jimei Bridge and provided equipment and technical services for the construction of the Fuzhou–Xiamen and Xiamen–Shenzhen high-speed railways. This time, being able to once again supply mobile formwork for the Xiamen Third Eastern Passage is a testament to the recognition of the Xin Dafang brand and the affirmation of its technology by all sectors of society and industry peers. Xin Dafang will live up to these expectations and spare no effort to deliver a satisfactory outcome for this project. Cao Changxing, Deputy Chief Engineer of the Lifting Business Unit, then gave a detailed presentation on the technical proposal, covering the project overview and construction challenges, a comprehensive review of the technical solution, technical parameters and features, descriptions of key components and their functions, as well as assembly, construction, and dismantling procedures. After hearing the design presentation, the experts thoroughly reviewed the design documentation and posed questions regarding the innovative and critical aspects of the proposal. Following a series of deliberations, the experts unanimously concluded that the overall formwork design is reasonable, with strength, stiffness, and stability meeting the relevant code requirements; the equipment functions adequately meet the demands of various on-site working conditions; the system exhibits excellent operability; and the proposal is generally feasible, thus recommending its approval. The successful development of the DXZ60/3500 downward-type mobile formwork bridge-launching machine represents a major technological breakthrough. It is capable of handling the largest span of 60 meters, the smallest horizontal curve radius of 320 meters, and the heaviest cast-in-place box girder weighing up to 3,500 tons—setting new records in the process and providing invaluable experience and reference for mobile formwork bridge construction in China.
